Atlantean Wars newsletter 01.

November news special.
Brought to you by Archangel, Equnai, Monty.
Your very own news team.

On October 25th, we saw a renewal of the moderators in this game. A lot of inactive mods have been removed from their position of power due to their inactivity ( this could be a possible warning shot to other mods to make sure they keep active). We also saw the appointment of new mods in the form of The Evil Within, Tonto and Lord of Flam( it can be seen that a lot of people were upset with that last one but this reporter can't see why?). We can also see that Absolute was promoted to a Forum Mod. The news team hopes that these people will have success in their new position in the game.

We can also see that the RP section of the forum has gone through a slight revamping. New rules have been introduced along with new stories and a list of people who are banned from Role Playing. This is due to the Rp mods Osiris and Archangel. There are also reports of an Role Playing Day coming in November to signify the come back of the forum.

The discussion on the proposed reset for ATW 2.0 has finely calmed down a lot.
The topic boiled up a lot of reply’s and many opinions.

This month also saw the return of one of the oldest Atlantean Wars player--Ålbel The Wicked. After a long break from playing, Ålbel has returned and is back with a vengeance-- in the words of Ålbel-''Thats right, I am back and ready to rule the Atlantean universe once again.''. The newsteam wishes happy returns and success with ruling the universe.

In late 30 October a few ATW players got to see a nice preview of the new look on the command Center page.
Although it had some flaws and bugs in them, most where able to see them, and where happy with the look.

Not long after the war between BK and Legion an other war broken out, this time between KGA VS NBS Guild.
Apparently the war was triggered by an PM, and was reacted with sabbing..

The ATW News team also caught up with coder/administrator lycurgus and we were able to ask him a few questions concerning the game, its future and his own life:

1. what do you like most in RL. ( to get to know the person btr)
I like finding time for myself. Thats a pretty rare commodity. And when I do I like to either go hiking along the mountains by my house or do some painting and illustration.

2. did you do any coding before taking ATW on you, and whitey´s hands?
I've been coding websites since 1992 ever since Mosaic (precursor to netscape). My current real job is as a User Interface Designer for a tech company in Seattle. I end up messing with PHP, Ruby, Postgresql, Oracle, and of course your standard web technologies of xhtml, css, and javascript. I do some freelance web design as well. Most of my freelance though is book design and illustration.

3. how do you like the community?
I like the community very much. I've met some interesting people here and look forward to reading the forums each day.

4. what gave you the idea for an newsletter?
Well I wanted to keep ATW in peoples face. I don't want them to forget. Want them to realize that we are out here and we want to include everyone in our little community. Also, there are a lot of players that don't necessarily use the forums all the time or at all. A newsletter can rach these players as well, and hopefully interest them to get more involved on the forums or at least have an idea about whats happening in the the game.

5. what is you favourite food?
I can't even think of the name for it because it has some native name, but its from Colombia. Its some sort of fish that is from an Andean indian recipe. I had it in a small colonial town north of Bogota that is called Iza. Its pretty good. I get it every time I go to Colombia.

6. Do you think the game is as good as it should be?
The game is good. Obviously its good enough to attract 2800 players. And we're growing everyday. But there are things that I think it could do better both on the visual side as well as on the backend that might actually speed up the game.

7. Can you give us any indication of what you have in store for the game?
The current plan is to clean up the game code and hopefully fix some long standing issues. We also are moving towards a more sophisticated front for the game that will be more interactive. Quests will be a major part of game play - in fact we are working on a new quest now to coincide with the release of a new feature. Whitey and Me have also been talking about ways to have more contests among players an potentially have prizes. We're still working out the details of that, but it should be pretty cool once we've worked out the issues.

Well this was our first newsletter, we (Archangel, Equnai, Monty) hope you enjoy reading it. Look forward to our next newsletter where we interview another coder.

Yun’s Rant

Yun-Yuuzhan

Lately the wars of ATW have gotten a bit out of hand. There’s been two major conflicts within the past month between the Black Knights and + The Legion +. And I’m here to tell you that enough is enough. Give up the war mongering both of you! Sure the people who lose the most in terms of value is the high ranking players, the leaders of these powerful alliances who decide it is time for war, who have the stats to lose. These are also the players who have Atlantean Status. These people can purchase turns with in-game resources or even pay for turns with real money, because when you buy another person AS that’s effectively what you are doing. This allows them to acquire tens of thousands of turns, so what’s a few thousand to mass here or a sab there.

With the current bugs in the sabotage system all it costs to sab another player is 1 spy and an amazing 4 turns! Ha, well it’s only 20 dollars for another ten thousand! This affects those of us that aren’t able to purchase AS the most. We’re always on the verge of having no turns, so it’s hard to rebuild those resources lost to sabotage and massings. So I say it’s not the top ranking people who really lose the wars it’s the little guy! The people that can’t afford AS get the rawest deal. Sure people might lose twice the amount of stats but they can buy turns to rebuild, these people have to wait for the turns to trickle in and then slowly rebuild hoping another war doesn’t break out, because if it does their work will be for naught. There needs to be another way to gather more turns.

I propose an in-game market so people can trade for turns with in-game resources so that they aren’t stuck waiting on father time. Further I suggest that the people without AS get either more trades per week or something to help them gain some ground on their dollar-spending competition. This might help to even up the competition in the game some. I think even the high ranking people in the game could agree that more people to sab would be more fun.
